Richard B. Loughry
Richard B. Loughry, age 83, of Sebring, passed away Sunday, October 29, 2023. He was born June 7, 1940, in Canton, the son of the late Bernard and Harriet (Schnake) Loughry. Richard was a 1958 graduate of Canton McKinley High, where he played basketball for the Bulldogs. He attended Kent State University, where he was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education in 1962. He later earned a master's degree in Education and an Education Specialist (Ed.S) degree at Kent State. Richard taught Spanish and History in Canton City Schools for 32 years, primarily at McKinley and some at Crenshaw Junior High. He retired in 1995 and then taught part time for several years at St. Thomas Aquinas High School and as an adjunct professor at Walsh University.
A devoted McKinley fan, Richard was a longtime booster and member of the Bulldog Athletic Association. He attended 76 consecutive McKinley-Massillon football games from 1953 to 2022 and was a regular at Fawcett Stadium and the Memorial Field House for countless McKinley games throughout the years. Always quick to share stories about McKinley athletics, he was a featured historian in Timeless Rivals, a 2017 documentary about the fabled McKinley-Massillon rivalry.
In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by an infant son, Robert. He is survived by his wife, Carol (Humphrey), with whom he celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 21; one daughter, Alicia, one son, Eric (Rachel Harris), and five grandchildren. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Crandall Medical Center and the Hospice of the Valley for their care of Richard.
