John P. Dougherty
Age 87, of Canton, passed away Sat., Feb. 27, 2021. He was born Jan. 11, 1934 in Canton, a son of the late Russell and Agnes (Arnold) Dougherty, and was a life resident. John was a 1950 graduate of Lincoln High School and a 1957 graduate of the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Geology, and where he was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity. He retired from Advest Inc. as a Broker, and previously worked for McDonald & Company and Prescott Ball & Turbin. John served two terms from 1995-2000 as a Stark County Commissioner. He was a seventeen year member of the Jackson Local Board of Education and resigned in 1990 when he was elected to the State of Ohio Board of Education. John was very active in the organization of the Hall of Fame Festival Parade and was General Chairman in 1967. He was a member of the Lake Cable Recreation Association, which he served as President seven years. John also served as President of the Massillon AAA and was a Board Member for eighteen years. He had been a member of the North Canton Jaycees which he served as President and received the Distinguished Service Award. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Rosemary Sagey and a sister-in-law, Carole Dougherty. John is survived by his wife, Sandy Dougherty, with whom he would have celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary on June 17th, two daughters, Dr. Cynthia and Mark Thompson and Dr. Lynda and Klaus Schmidt, four grandchildren, Maura and Maegann Thompson, and Marcus and Alexsandra Schmidt, and his brother, Ronald Dougherty. A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held Friday, July 23, 2021 at 3 p.m. in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens with Rev. Gary Smith, officiating. A Celebration of Life will be held from 6-9 p.m. at Lake Cable Club House.
