Verl Z. Garster, Jr.
Age 89, of Canton, passed away Monday, Feb. 29, 2016. He was born in Canton, the son of the late Dr. Verl Z. and Jennie (Robinson) Garster, Sr., resided in Waynesburg many years, and Canton since 1972. Verl was a 1944 graduate of Waynesburg High School, and also a graduate of Glenville State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. He received his Master's Degree in Education from West Virginia University. His first teaching job was at Edison Junior High in Perry Local Schools and then became Principal of East Canton Elementary. He also served as Principal in Washington, PA, Steubenville, and Northwest Local Schools, from which he retired in 1979. Following retirement, Verl served as Perry Township Zoning Inspector for several years. He was a member of Crossroads United Methodist Church, a 59 year member of Tubal Lodge #551 F. & A.M. in Minerva, the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Canton, Tadmor Temple, and the former Canton Moose Lodge. Verl was an avid model railroader. He served his country in the U. S. Army during World War II. Survived by his wife, Doris A. (Betz) Garster, with whom he would have celebrated their 57th Wedding Anniversary on May 23rd; one daughter and son-in-law, Claudia and Scott Westphal, of Cuyahoga Falls; one son and daughter in-law, Bruce and Christine Garster, of Perry Heights; five grandchildren, Chelsey (Bryce) Newton, Zachary (Elizabeth) Garster, Colin, Aaron, and Chloe Westphal, and his beloved great-granddogs. Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Finefrock-Gordon Funeral Home in Magnolia with Rev. Ed Fashbaugh officiating. Interment will be in Sandy Valley Cemetery with Military Honors. Friends may call Friday 5-8 p.m. in the funeral home. Masonic Services will be held Friday at 4:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Verl's memory may be made to: Alzheimer's Association, 408 9th St SW, Canton, OH 44707, or American Diabetes Association, P.O.
