Stephen R. Jacoby, Sr.
of East Sparta, passed away Wed., July 9, 2014, on his eighty-ninth birthday. He was born in Ellwood City, PA, a son of the late Stephen and Katherine (Romisher) Jacoby, and had been an East Sparta resident most of his life. He attended Canton South High School. Stephen retired in 1983 from The Timken Co., after 32 years service, where he was an overhead crane operator. He previously worked 10 years at the U. S. Ceramic Tile Co. in East Sparta. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved animals, especially his dogs. Stephen served in the U. S. Army, 2nd Division, Company K, during World War II, and was in the European Theatre and participated in all the major battles, including the Normandy Beach Invasion, Battle of The Bulge, Battle of France, the Rhineland , and the Ardennes Battles. He received a Purple Heart, and was captured during a battle and was a POW for four months. Preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters, Harold and Sam Jacoby, Katherine Salmon, Dorothy Scafide, Geraldine Barnes, and Sarah Jacoby. Survived by his wife, Betty (Hager) Jacoby, with whom he celebrated their 66th Wedding Anniversary on April 10th; two sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Debbie Jacoby, Jr., of East Sparta, and Dave and Syvilla Jacoby, of Navarre; four granddaughters, Stacy and Brian Soehnlen, Melissa and Jeff Beck, Jody Morris, and Bonnie and Randy Troyer, and 10 great-grandchildren. Services will be held Sat. at 12 Noon in Asbury United Methodist Church with Pastor Ruthann Bosley officiating. Interment in Asbury Cemetery in Pike Township. Friends may call Sat. 10 a.m.-12 Noon at the church before the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Stephen's memory may be made to Rebuilding Together, ATTN: Veterans Fund, 788 Donald Ave., Akron, OH 44306.
