Robert D. Johanning

Age 93, of East Sparta, passed away Monday, March 25, 2024.  He was born Dec. 20, 1930 in Canton, a son of the late Paul and Mary (Garner) Johanning, and was a life resident of this area.  Bob was a 1948 graduate of Canton South High School, and retired in 1991 from Washington Steel Co. (Republic Steel) with 20 years' service, where he was an overhead crane operator.  He was a member of Canton First Christian Church and between there and East Sparta Christian Church he taught Sunday School for 50 years, and served as an Elder at both churches.  Bob honorably served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict for 13 months and with the National Guard he served a total of 6 ½ years.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Rose Marie (Black) Johanning, on March 23, 2021, and a brother, Paul W. Johanning, Jr.  He is survived by a daughter and son, Diane (Don) Airhart and Paul (Darlene) Johanning; three grandchildren, Katelyn (Chris) Becker, and their children, Madison and Macklen, Matthew (Alison) Johanning and her daughter, Sophia Selby and their son, Jack, and Nathan Airhart.

Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. in the Formet-Clevenger & Gordon Funeral Home with Ron Iwanusa officiating.  Friends may call Monday 11 a.m.-1 p.m. before the service.
