Ramon "Sonny" Halter

Age 92, of Magnolia, passed away Sat., August 27, 2022.  He was born April 5, 1930 in East Sparta, a son of the late John Halter and Nora Close, and was a life resident of East Sparta and Magnolia.  Sonny was a 1948 graduate of East Sparta High School.   He was a retired employee of Green Thumb Nursery in Canton and previously worked at the Sparta Ceramic Tile Company.  He also helped at Finefrock-Gordon Funeral Home.  He was a member of St. James Catholic Church, loved gardening, and was very involved with the Helping Hands Network.  Sonny honorably served in the U. S. Naval Reserve.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Carole Ann Halter, on Feb. 23, 2018, and a son-in-law, Kim Steinmetz.  Sonny is survived by two daughters, Kimberly "Kim" Steinmetz, and Kris (Bill) Hayhurst, and one son, Steve (Tom Dooley) Halter; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, Jennifer Griffing and her children, Landen and Jillian, Scott (Robyn) Steinmetz, and their children, Dane and Nora, Kyle (Marilyn) Hayhurst, and their son, Desmond, and Ali Hayhurst; two sisters, SueZanne Artzner, and Lynn (Tim) Farber.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Sat. at 12 Noon in St. James Catholic Church with Fr. Joseph Zamary as Celebrant.  Friends may call at the church on Sat. from 10 a.m.-12 Noon prior to the Mass.  Interment will be in East Sparta Cemetery with Military Honors.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in Sonny's memory may be made to either the Helping Hands Network or St. James School.  Condolences may be sent to: www.gordonfuneralhomes.com
