Obituary

Myrtle Viola Leak

Age 104, of Canton and formerly of Struthers, passed away Friday, August 15, 2014, in Aultman Compassionate Care Center.  She was born August 14, 1910, in Rootstown, OH, a daughter of the late John and Mary (Grate) Gue, and had been a life resident of Struthers until coming to Canton several years ago.  Myrtle was a 1928 graduate of Struthers High School, received an Associate Degree in Education from Ohio University in 1930 and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Kent State University in 1939.  She was retired from Struthers City Schools, after 28  years service, having taught at Fifth Street, Sexton Street, and Lyon Plat Elementary Schools.  After retiring she went back to Fifth Street School to tutor and also volunteered with the Youngstown Ministerial Association for several years as a tutor.  Myrtle was a long standing active  member of Struthers Parkside Church (formerly Struthers United Presbyterian Church), where she was a Sunday school teacher, and served as a Deacon.  She was Past-President of the Evening Circle and a member of the Fireside Class.  She was a member of the Struthers Music Club, Struthers, Mahoning County, and Ohio State Retired Teachers Associations, and Alpha Pi Sigma Sorority.  She also enjoyed playing the piano and reading.  Myrtle was an accomplished artist of water colors, oils and pastels.  Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 38 years, Arthur Leak, Jr., on Jan. 1, 1981, her dear sisters, Ruth Cather and Bernice Mae Redfern, and her special friends, Marian Wiles and Mary Lou Rice.  Survived by her devoted daughter and caregiver, Mary Ann Leak, of Canton, and loving son, Bill (Irene) Leak, of Carlsbad, CA.  She was the loving grandmother of four and loving great-grandmother of five, Becky Thomas and her children, Brianna, Maile, and Julian, Arthur Leak and Cheri Dennis, Raymond (Chiharu) Leak, and Deborah (Jordan) Hetrick, and their children, Santi and Kailea,  also four nieces and one nephew.     Friends may call Wed. 6:30-8 p.m. at the Formet-Clevenger & Gordon Funeral Home in Canton and calling hours in Struthers will be held Thursday 4-6 p.m at Struthers Parkside Church with services to follow at 6 p.m. with Pastor James Berkebile officiating.Interment in Lake Park Cemetery in Youngstown will be held Friday at 11 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in Myrtle's memory may be made to Struthers Parkside Church, 110 Poland Ave., Struthers, OH 44471 or Canton Aultman Hospice Program, 2821 Woodlawn Ave. NW, Canton, OH 44708.   Condolences may be sent to: www.gordonfuneralhomes.com
