Obituary

Michael Bryan Gaynor July 12, 1972 – January 25, 2026

Michael Bryan Gaynor, 53—a devoted husband, loving father, cherished son and brother, and respected leader—passed away peacefully at home on January 25, 2026, after a courageous battle with a rare and aggressive cancer, small cell carcinoma of the prostate.

Born on July 12, 1972, Michael's life, though far too short, was lived fully, passionately, and with deep purpose. He attended St. Michael's School and Canton Central Catholic High School, Class of 1990. A proud member of the Boy Scouts of America, Michael achieved scouting's highest rank, Eagle Scout. In 1997, he was awarded the Marine Corps League Good Citizen Award, affirming the values instilled through Scouting. Throughout his life, Michael embodied the Scout Spirit—honesty, loyalty, kindness, and respect.

In 1995, Michael graduated from the University of Dayton with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Criminal Justice. While at UD, he was a proud member of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. Guided by his studies and his love of reading, Michael developed an early and enduring passion for politics and public service.

A natural leader and tireless professional, Michael dedicated his career to service, advocacy, and excellence. For more than 17 years, he poured his heart, energy, and leadership into GoRail, a nonprofit organization focused on educating community leaders nationwide about the public benefits of freight rail. He helped shape its mission, expand its impact, and guide it confidently into the future. A passionate rail advocate, Michael was promoted to his dream role as President of GoRail in 2025 and served on its Board of Directors.

Prior to GoRail, Michael served in public service as a District Director for the U.S. House of Representatives, a campaign manager for an Ohio congressman, and Vice President at American Strategies. Earlier in his career, he worked with the Boy Scouts of America as a Senior District Executive, mentoring young people and strengthening communities. In every role, Michael was known for his strong work ethic, strategic mind, and unwavering commitment to doing what was right.

Michael lived with adventure in his soul. He embraced life with fearless enthusiasm—from skydiving to mountain biking, hunting, dirt bike racing, and riding his beloved motorcycle. Music deeply moved him and filled his spirit. He had a passion for fine wine, gourmet food, a well-crafted Old Fashioned, and a good cigar. He was an avid fan of Formula One racing and The Ohio State Buckeyes and relished lively conversations about politics and history.

Above all else, Michael loved his family. He was devoted to his beloved wife of 28 years, Elizabeth (Egan) Gaynor—his best friend, partner, and greatest love. He was an extraordinary father to his sons, Nathaniel and Collin, whom he adored and of whom he was endlessly proud. Family was the center of his life, the source of his strength, and his greatest joy. Some of his favorite memories were coaching his son's mountain biking team, outdoor family adventures, cherished beach vacations, and bringing people together by cooking fabulous meals for friends and family—always paired with a thoughtfully chosen bottle of wine.

Michael had deep faith and a profound love for his country. He was an active member of St. Paul the Apostle Parish in Westerville, Ohio. Throughout his illness, he faced every challenge with remarkable strength, optimism, and grace. A true warrior to the very end, Michael remained positive, resilient, and focused on others even in his hardest moments. His courageous spirit will live in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Michael is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth Gaynor; his sons, Nathaniel and Collin; and his loyal dog, Henry. He is also survived by his parents, William and Maryann Gaynor; his siblings, Rebecca Falconer (John) and Elizabeth Jacob (Jon); his aunt, Consuelo Monterrubio; and his nieces and nephews Jonas (godson), Joshua, Jessica, Margaret, Kate, John, and Hannah. He will also be deeply missed by extended family, lifelong friends, colleagues, and all whose lives he has touched.

Michael's legacy is one of leadership, faith, adventure, and unwavering devotion to family!
