Obituary

Maynard K. Hewit,

age 99, of Canton, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2026, following a brief illness.  He was born Oct. 31, 1926, in Ashtabula, OH, a son of the late Raymond and Grace (Kline) Hewit, Sr.

Maynard served with the US Army during WWII and retired from the USPS after thirty years service as a postal clerk in Conneaut.  Previously he was a Switchman at Nickle Plate Railroad and a Draftsman at GE.

Maynard loved woodworking and built a number of beautiful pieces which grace his children's homes today.  He especially loved to build clocks and give them as gifts for friends and family.  He had a beautiful tenor singing voice and was involved directing and singing in a number of choirs and musical groups over the years.  He and his wife, Laura, loved to sing duets together, later including their kids as they got older.  He was involved in a number of community musical productions over the years.

Maynard and Laura's love story began on August 24, 1957, when they were married in the First Baptist Church of Jefferson, OH, and lasted for 68 years until his death.

Maynard raised his family in the West Springfield Baptist Church of West Springfield, PA, and later attended Jackson Friends Church in Massillon, OH.  He was a faithful music leader, deacon, and Sunday school teacher over the years.  Maynard was a committed follower of Jesus Christ and a great testimony to those around him.   He would often be found studying his Bible and memorizing Scripture.

Maynard was preceded in death by his brothers, Raymond Hewit, Jr. and Maurice Hewit, and one sister, Edna Hewit.  He will be greatly missed by his wife Laura Hewit, and his children Ralph (Robin) Hewit, Connie (Steve) Wessel, Peggy (Paul) Bergstrom and Paul Hewit (Dr. Dee Dee Hecht-Hewit), his ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Calling hours will be at Jackson Friends Church, 7945 Portage St. NW, Massillon, OH 44646, on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, from 9:30-11 am, immediately followed by the service, Pastor Todd Schreiner officiating.
