Martha (Baughman) Wise Grant
Age 89, of North Canton, passed away Wed. morning in Windsor Medical Center. She was born Jan. 29, 1921, in Canton, a daughter of the late Oscar W. and Martha Hayes Baughman. Martie graduated from Lehman High School in 1937 before it's accreditation in 1938 and Canton Actual Business College in 1938. She married Richard Wise in 1940 and lived in the Detroit area for 35 years where she continued her interest in music, which included singing in church choirs and with the Detroit Symphony Chorus. She was employed for 15 years as Executive Secretary to Albert M. Sargent, founder of Pioneer Engineering & Manufacturing in Detroit. Following this, she was appointed by Governor George Romney to serve as Official Court Reporter to Circuit Judge James L. Ryan in the Circuit Court of Wayne County, Michigan. Martie and her husband, Richard, retired to Florida in 1978 where she became active in the Women's Club of Boynton Beach, and the Boynton Beach and Lake Worth Art Leagues. She served as an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Boynton Beach, and was Treasurer and Historian for the Presbyterian Women's Association. She maintained her membership in Victoria Chapter #290, Order of Eastern Star, and the Lehman High School Alumni Association. Martie returned "Home" in 2002 after 25 years in Florida and was a member of Faith United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by an infant son in 1947, her husband, Richard K. Wise, in 1987, her second husband, H. Edwin Grant, in 1994, also her sister and brother-in-law, Thelma and Carl Walker, and brothers and sisters-in-law, Wayne and Arlene Baughman, and Edgar and Mary Baughman. Survived by four nieces, Carole (Richard) Herman, and Christine (James) Bednar, all of North Canton, Julia (Richard) Hammerly, of Massillon, and Lenore (James) Gill, of Tucson, AZ; three step-children, Carole (Bruce) Moulthrop, Max (Ann) Grant, and Eddie (Maline) Grant; 19 grandchildren and great-grandchildren and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews, all of whom brought joy over the years. Services will be conducted Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the Formet-Clevenger & Gordon Funeral Home with Rev. Cara Stultz Costello officiating. Interment in Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday 2-4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Martie's memory may be made to Faith United Methodist Church, 300 9th St. NW, North Canton, OH 44720.
