Obituary

Luella Baker Deitz

Age 88, of Greentown, passed away Thursday, May 7, 2015, in her home surrounded by her loving family.  Lu was born, Feb. 19, 1927, in Barberton, a daughter of the late Clifford and Glada (Fox) Baker, and lived most of her life in the Canton area.  She was a member of the McKinley High School Chorus of 1945.  She was a former employee of Halle's at Belden Village and also at City Loan in Canton.  Lu was known for her love of baking and had received many awards that she proudly displayed in her home.  She loved her home that her husband had built for them and referred to it as her "Taj Mahal".  She loved her children and found even more joy in her grandchildren, and loved knowing she was privileged to see two great-grandchildren.  Lu was a member of the Chapel in North Canton, where she sang in the choir and before becoming unable to get out, she loved going to church and considered herself to be the unofficial greeter of the church, standing where she could greet as many people as she could each and every Sunday morning. She loved the interaction with people and said when she died, she hoped there was standing room only because of her love for people. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of almost 37 years, Thomas W. Deitz, on Aug. 22, 1990, and a daughter, Nancy Deitz, on Oct. 22, 2011.  Survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Evan Shumway, of Canton, and her son and daughter-in-law, Jon and Leanne Deitz, of Massillon;  also four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Dale Rios and their son, Max, Ryan and Emily Shumway and their daughter, Finley, Lauren Deitz and Audra Deitz.  Friends may call Sat 1-2:30 p.m. at the Chapel in North Canton with the service to follow immediately at 2:30 p..m. with Rev. Dwight Mason officiating.  A luncheon will be served immediately following the service.  All friends are invited to share this time with us as we celebrate her life.  A private burial for the family will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in Sunset Hills Memory Gardens where she will join her husband and father in the Veterans Section.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in Luella's memory may be made to the Greentown Fire Dept., or Aultman Hospice, 2821 Woodlawn Ave. NW, Canton, OH 44708.  Condolences may be sent to: www.gordonfuneralhomes.com.
