Kenneth C. Woods
Age 99, of Canton, died Sunday, March 4, 2012, in Aultman Compassionate Care Center, after a brief illness. He was born Nov. 3, 1912, in Massillon, a son of the late Stanley and Anna "Lucille" (Meyers) Woods. A graduate of Washington High School Class of 1930, Ken saw history in the making, and enjoyed telling stories of the past. He joined F.D.R.'s Civilian Conservation Corps and served six months in California. During World War II he worked at the Westinghouse Naval Ordnance Plant. Following the war he partnered with Bernard Nelson and together they owned Nelson & Woods Construction. Ken later started his own building company - Woods & Son Builders. After retirement and years of traveling, he kept active by working for Crystal Park Lumber, Brookside Country Club, and St. Luke Lutheran Home. During his long and wonderful life he was a member of North Canton Sportsman's Club, Canton Baptist Temple Jolly Sixties, Marlington Jolly Pilgrims, a Canton election volunteer, a Cub Scout leader, and a member of Pike Grange, where he volunteered for 15 years at the Stark County Fair making pancakes. He also was a lifetime member of Calvary Presbyterian Church. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by the love of his life for 73 years, the former Fanchon Mowery, on Feb. 28, 2009, his grandson, Larry Staats, his son-in-law, William Staats, his sisters and brothers-in-law, Lucille (Al) Doty, and Edythe (Vernon) Oser, and brothers and sisters-in-law, Stanton (Mary), Donald, Robert, Harlan, and James (Rose) Woods. Survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Rosanne Woods, with whom he resided, and his daughter, Sandra Staats, all of Canton; he leaves behind seven grandchildren, Guy (Serena) Staats, of Forest Park, GA, Susan (Michael) Cammel, Kevin Woods, John (fiancee Lisa Contruci) Woods, and Douglas Staats, all of Canton, Robert (Lesley) Woods, of Cincinnati, Kathleen (Jeremy) McIntyre, of Ypsilanti, MI, and grand-daughter-in-law, Heather Staats, of Beach City. He also is survived by twelve great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Jennifer, Brian, and Brooklyn Cammel, Madelyn Woods, Bailey, Genevieve, Cayden, and Liam McIntyre, Hannah, Trinity, and Aurora Staats; his sisters-in-law, Tracy Woods,of Florida, and Georgia Woods, of Columbus, OH; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. in the Formet-Clevenger & Gordon Funeral Home with Pastor C. David Morgan officiating. Interment in Sunset Hills Burial Park.
