Obituary

Kenneth V. Slaski

Age 72, of Canton, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2016, in his home surrounded by his loving family.  His passing comes after a 6 plus year journey with ALS (aka Lou Gehrig's disease).  Born on Valentine's Day in Pittsburgh, PA, Ken (affectionately referred to as "Kenny V") was the son of late steel worker Harry and Sophia (Bielwicz) Slaski. He called Canton home for over 40 years - except for 2010-2015, when he and his wife lived in Austin, TX.  A high school, cross country-running star, he graduated in 1962 from South Hills Catholic in Pittsburgh and then attended Duquesne University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration & Marketing.  Ken entered the work world as a Bank Examiner for the FDIC in Columbus, Ohio, and then, was employed at Central Trust Bank (Bank One) where he ended his tenure as VP of Funds Management. Amid his career, he served our country in the Vietnam War (US Army) receiving a Bronze Star and a sharpshooter designation.  Ken's entrepreneurial spirit eventually inspired him to start his own financial advising company - Banc Info Inc.  After retiring in the early 2000s…Ken soon tired of retirement. Claiming he could "only play golf and work in the yard so many times in a week," he sought to stay productive with hands-on jobs ranging from Harry London Candies to Ace Hardware. During this time, he continued investing as a hobby and scored every golfer's dream: a hole-in-one! Ken was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and is survived by his wife and devoted caregiver, Linda (Dettling) Slaski, with whom he would have celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary this July 1st; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Amanda (Schaffert) Slaski, grandsons – the apples of his eye - Oliver and Finn, both of which have been blessed with his infectious "Hollywood smile;" daughter, Jennifer Slaski and her fiance, Jonathan Halligan, of Austin TX; brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Trish Slaski, of Manassas, VA, niece and nephew, Anne (Slaski) Moore and Matthew Slaski. Finally, his dear brother-in-law, James G. Dettling, who Ken fondly considered his very, "good buddy," and sister-in-law Marie (Heil) Dettling. The family also recognizes Ken's extended family of caregivers who accompanied us daily on our tender journey: Loretta, Tiara, Carmelita, Collette, Dee….thank you from the bottom of our hearts.  Our family's hearts runneth over with happiness knowing that Kenny V is once again walking, golfing and landscaping in Heaven.  We feel it fitting that his legacy here was booked-ended by his arrival on Valentine's Day and departure on St. Paddy's Day - symbolic of the love and merriment he embodied while here. A memorial service will be held Sat. at 11:30 a.m. in Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Uniontown.  A celebration will be held at the family's residence immediately following the service.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in Ken's name to the Central Texas or Ohio chapters of the ALS Association.  Condolences may be sent to: www.gordonfuneralhomes.com
