John A. "Jack" Sutherland

John Austin (Jack) Sutherland, Age 89, passed away at home and entered into eternal life on April 24, 2024. He was born on November 18, 1934 in Canton, Ohio to his late parents, John Gow Sutherland and Vesta Dayhuff Sutherland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sister Donna Beckner. A lifelong resident of Waynesburg, Jack graduated from Malvern High School in 1953 and married the love of his life, Sally Stires Sutherland, on March 3, 1956.  Jack and Sally lived and worked on Sutherland Poultry Farm and Hatchery, and Jack also worked at Superior Dairy, US Ceramic Tile, and retired as a machinist at Shanafelt Manufacturing. Jack and Sally were blessed with six children and eight grand-children. Jack enjoyed the outdoors, especially mowing on his John Deere tractor. Jack was a member of the Fellowship of Little Country Church and served as a trustee.

Jack is survived by his wife of 68 years, Sally Stires Sutherland and his sister Jeanne Booth of Palmyra, Virginia, sons John (Adrienne Lavine) of Waynesburg, and James Ph.D. (Rosa Barrio) of Bilbao, Spain, daughters Susan J.D. (Robert Opatrny) of Naples, Florida, Sharon M.D. (Kenneth Grossi) of Cleveland, Sara MacGruer (Iain) of Golspie, Scotland, and Shauna (Al Schuck) of Oberlin, Ohio.  He is survived by grandchildren Joseph Sutherland, Austin and Julia Opatrny, Laura and Benjamin Grossi, Silas Jenkins, and Molly and Niamh MacGruer.

Family and friends are welcome for visitation on Wednesday, May 1, 2024 from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM at Little Country Church, 7886 Ravenna Ave., SE, Waynesburg, with the service beginning at 11:00 AM. Pastor Ted Knapp will serve as officiant. Cremation will follow.
