IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John Slish,
Sr.
January 12, 1947 – June 23, 2025
With a heart as big as his garage and a spirit rooted as deep as the flowers he tended, John A. Slish, Sr. found peace on June 23, 2025—leaving behind a family who adored him, a yard that will surely miss his green thumb, and a legacy built on love, hard work, and a little bit of rock 'n' roll. Born in Canton, OH at the beginning of 1947, John was the first born of his three siblings to the late Patricia Slish (Keim) and John R. Slish. He was a man who believed in hard work, firm handshakes, and waving the American flag with pride. A proud U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran, John served his country with honor and wore his patriotism like his favorite sports team, Ohio State Buckeyes — every day and without apology. O-H! John wore many hats in life: loving husband, strong father, stepfather, proud grandfather and great grandfather, protective brother and uncle, and tireless handyman. He was most proud of his children, but his favorite title was "Papaw," especially to his great-grandsons, who he spoiled with unlimited snacks, stories, and hugs. John believed in Sunday dinners, holiday celebrations, and any other reason he could find to bring his family together. He was quick with a joke, even quicker to hug, and steady as a rock for anyone lucky enough to call him family. His hands were rarely idle. If he wasn't pulling weeds in his flower beds, you could find him in the garage tinkering with an engine of one of his classic cars, decorating elaborately for the holidays, or thumbing through old Elvis records with a grin that said, "They don't make music like this anymore." He was convinced Elvis was the King—and WD-40 could solve almost any problem. In the words of his favorite singer: "The image is one thing and the human being is another." John was both. One-of-a-kind, yet utterly down-to-earth. The kind of man this world doesn't make much anymore. So, as we say goodbye, we invite you to imagine him kneeling in a perfectly manicured flower bed, engine grease on shirt, humming "Love Me Tender," and looking down with pride at the family he left blooming behind. The family would like to extend a sincere and heartfelt thank you to Dr. Nashawati & Dr. Degenhard, the Aultman ICU Nurses, along with Jamie, Bill, and Kelsie from the respiratory team for the dedication and compassion they showed throughout his entire stay. A special thank you to his nurse bestie, Rachael Ungaschick. Services will be held Friday, June 27, at 11 AM in the Formet-Clevenger & Gordon Funeral Home at 1803 Cleveland Ave NW, Canton, OH 44709. Interment in Calvary Cemetery. Friends and family will be received Thursday, June 26, from 5-7 PM in the funeral home. Condolences may be left at: www.gordonfuneralhomes.com.
