JOHN L. SAVAGE,
Age 91, of Canton, passed away Wed., Nov. 4, 2015. Born in Tyner, NC, a son of the late John and Lottie Savage, he had been a resident of Canton for over 60 years. John earned a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering from North Carolina State University and served with the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII for over three years in the China-India-Burma Theater. He retired in 1987 from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. after 36 years of service, as a plant manager, and was an active member of Grace United Church of Christ for 59 years, having served as a Teacher, Elder and Deacon. John was also a member of the North Canton Elks, the Akron-Canton Computer Club, the Pro Football Hall of Fame Luncheon Club, and was Past President of the Akron Toastmasters Club. He was an avid sports fan, loved to play golf and played baseball all of his life, both amateur and professional. John enjoyed gardening, reading, woodworking, travel and playing cards with friends. Preceded in death by his daughter, Barbara Ann Farmer, six sisters, and one brother. Survived by his wife, Elaine Savage, with whom he celebrated their 62nd Wedding Anniversary on Mar. 28; one son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Kristi Savage; one son-in-law, William Farmer; five grandchildren and their spouses, Jennifer and Douglas Starnes, Julie and Andrew Spence, Brittany and Drew Mahan, Jordan and Paula Savage, and Clay and Lacey Savage; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Sun. at 2 p.m. in Grace United Church of Christ with Pastor Jacqueline McMillen officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service, from 1-2 p.m. in the church. The Formet-Clevenger & Gordon Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
