John R. Powell,

Age 73, of East Sparta, passed away Wed., Oct. 30, 2024.  He was born Mar. 5, 1951, in Canton, a son of the late Norman and Irma (Phillips) Powell.  John was a 1969 graduate of Sandy Valley High School and retired in 2001 from the Timken Co., where he was a Supervisor.  He was a member of the East Sparta Volunteer Fire Dept. since 1969 and the Canton Baptist Temple.  John loved fishing, golfing, the Cleveland Guardians and performing with the Sandy Valley Alumni Band.  Preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Powell, in 2023.  Survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Angela (Carlos) Rogers, and Jennifer (Scott) Strebel; two sons and daughters-in-law, Greg (Jamie) Powell, and James (Therese) Penland; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Lee (Lois) Powell, and James (Carol) Powell; and ten grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.  A Memorial Service will be held Fri., Nov 8, 2024 at 3 pm in the Canton Baptist Temple with Pastor Jake Tovissi officiating.  Friends may call two hours before the service, from 1-3 pm, in the church.  The Finefrock-Gordon Funeral Home in Magnolia is in charge of arrangements.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in John's memory may be made to: Canton Baptist Temple (in the memo: Camp C.H.O.F.), 515 Whipple Ave NW, Canton, OH 44708.  Condolences may be left at: www.gordonfuneralhomes.com.
