John W. "Skip" Hornyak
Age 76, of Massillon, passed away Friday morning in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Parma, OH, a son of the late John M. and Elizabeth Balla Hornyak, and had been a Massillon resident since 1962. Skip was a 1953 graduate of Parma Schaff High School, and a 1976 graduate of Walsh College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English. He attended the National Academy of Broadcasting in Washington D.C., and at that time began his career in broadcasting at Station WEVA in Emporia, VA. He then came to WTIG in Massillon from 1962-1966 and then began a 33 year stay at WHBC in Canton, retiring in 1999. Skip was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Canton and was an avid radio control plane operator. He served four years in the U.S. Navy and two years in the Merchant Marine. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Koehler and Virginia Gervais, and a granddaughter, Charlotte Sutter. Survived by his devoted wife, Kathy M. Hornyak, with whom he would have celebrated their 52nd Wedding Anniversary on May 23rd; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen and Alan Ganoe, of Inwood, WV, and Christine and Peter Sutter, of Barberton; one son and daughter-in-law, John and Debra Hornyak, of Canton; eight grandchildren, Amanda and Matthew Cox, Emily and Genevieve Hornyak, Teresa, Natalie, Noah, and Benjamin Sutter; one great-granddaughter, Graycee Cox. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. Michael's Catholic Church with his friend, Fr. Don King, as Celebrant.
