Obituary

John L. Herstine, Sr. Age 91, of Magnolia, passed away Monday, March 7, 2011, in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Canton, a son of the late Joseph L. and Virginia Meyer Herstine, and was a life resident of the Magnolia-Waynesburg area. John was a 1938 graduate of Waynesburg High School. He retired from Teamsters Local #92 and also worked as a custodian at East Sparta Elementary School where all the kids called him "Grandpa", and he had a bread route for Sterling and Nickles Bakeries. John was a member of Magnolia United Methodist Church and the NRA. He took great pride in his garden and he loved to hunt. But the most important thing for John was his beloved family. Preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Gardner, two grandchildren, Jimmie Herstine, Jr. and Consula Herstine, two brothers, Paul "Pete" and Max Herstine, and a brother-in-law, Harvey Reed. Survived by his wife, Jewel M. Herstine, with whom he celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary on Sept. 30, 2010; one daughter, Joyce Nero, of North Industry; six sons and daughters-in-law, John and Vicki Herstine, Jr. and Jimmie and Tina Herstine, all of Magnolia, Jerry and Cheryl Herstine, of Bolivar, Jay and Carol Herstine, of Magnolia, Joe and Carolynn Herstine, of Minerva, and Jeff and LeAnn Herstine, of Hale, MI; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Pauline Reed, and Mayrene and Landel "Boze" Offenberger, all of Waynesburg; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Richard Herstine, of Sandyville, Stanton and Twila Herstine, of Louisville, Jim and Rosemary Herstine, of Magnolia, and Lynn and Paige Herstine, of Waynesburg; 24 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, three step-great-grandchildren, and one step-great-great-granddaughter. Services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in Magnolia United Methodist Church with Pastor Steven M. Smith and Rev. Jeffrey Gindlesberger officiating. Interment in Magnolia Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday 5-8 p.m. at the Finefrock-Gordon Funeral Home in Magnolia.
