Obituary

Jo A. Pyle Age 76, of Canton, passed away Sunday morning in Aultman Compassionate Care Center. She was born in Canton, a daughter of the late Raymond and Thelma (Lewis) Smith, and was a life resident. Jo was a 1953 graduate of The Andrews School in Willoughby, OH, where she majored in textiles and clothing design. Growing up she loved swimming and spending family time at Lake Erie, in a cottage she helped her father build. Early in her married life she loved traveling throughout Europe while her husband served in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany. They continued the business begun by her parents during the Depression, Smith's Homemade Candies. During the summer months the family traveled throughout the United States and often to Florida. When George attended college and graduate school, Jo would spend nights reading him many of his textbooks, as well as driving him to his classes. Her support enabled him to participate in his numerous volunteer activities with the visually impaired and veterans organizations in addition to his own interests. Over the years she was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, an auxiliary member (Lioness) of the Willowbrook Lions Club, and a volunteer at the Discovery Center of the Stark County Historical Society. She loved gardening, sewing, crafting, knitting, reading and Meyers Lake. Preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, George R. Pyle, on July 19, 2012. Survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Amy Pyle, of Loveland, OH, and Risa and Michael Anderson, of New York City, NY; grand-dogs, Ziggy, Sadie, and Snapeling. Private interment was in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday 6-8 p.m. in the Community Room of Formet-Clevenger & Gordon Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jo's memory may be made to Aultman Compassionate Care Center, 2821 Woodlawn Ave. NW, Canton, OH 44708. Gordon (330) 456-4766 www.gordonfuneralhomes.com
