James E. Thomas
Age 93, of Canton, passed away Friday, Jan. 8, 2021. He was born August 26, 1927 in Canton, a son of the late Leo and Iris (Gerhart) Thomas, and was a life resident. Jim was a 1946 graduate of Lincoln High School. Jim retired as Director of Customer Services for the USPS in Canton. Previously he had been Postmaster in New Philadelphia from 1974-78. He had held various supervisory positions from 1967-74 in Canton and had been a Letter Carrier from 1949-67 in Canton. Jim was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church and he and his wife were also members of First United Methodist Church of Dunedin, FL. Jim honorably served his country during World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Shirley Thomas, on Feb. 13, 2016. Jim is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, David and Alma Thomas, a special cousin, Jon Thomas, and four step-children, Gretchen Reed Deubner, Rachel (Robert) Tolley, Scott (Debra) Reed, and Bruce (Pamela) Reed, 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. A virtual funeral service that will be Live Streamed will be held Wed., Jan. 13, 2021 at 10 a.m. in the Formet-Clevenger & Gordon Funeral Home with his cousin, Pastor Kenneth Thomas officiating. Military Honors will be held at the funeral home. Interment will be in Ft. Laurens Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Condolences may be sent to: www.gordonfuneralhomes.com
