Jack D. Wendell
Age 87, of Venice, FL, formerly of Waynesburg, passed away Tuesday morning, Oct. 5, 2010, in his home. He was born in Canton, a son of the late John and Elsie Shildtz Wendell, resided in Venice the past 31 years, previously residing in Waynesburg most of his life. Jack was a 1940 graduate of Canton Township High School. He retired in 1980 as owner of Wendell Ford Sales in Waynesburg, which he and his wife founded in March of 1954. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and attended Christ United Methodist Church in Venice. Jack was a 65 year member of Sandy Valley American legion Post #432, Magnolia Grange, which he served as Master and achieved all seven Degrees, and Pomona Grange. He was an avid golfer, and was a founding member of Lake Mohawk Golf Club, and was a member of Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice. Jack was a Master Sgt. in the U.S. Army Engineers during World War II, and was part of the Manhattan Project (Atomic Bomb Project) at Los Alamos, NM, and was proud of being present when the bomb was first tested at White Sands, NM. Preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters, Clifford and Kenneth Wendell, Erscle Almasy and Myrtle Griffing, and a half-sister, Vera Petersen. Survived by his wife, Coletta I. (Welker) Wendell, with whom he celebrated their 67th Wedding Anniversary on Jan 1st of this year; three daughters and sons-in-law, Charlene and Jack Knoch, Ronda and Larry Williams, and Daryl and Jeffrey James, all of Magnolia; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, Scott (Barb) Knoch, and their children, Justin, Ashley, Kinsey, and Braden, Tricia (Louis) Trilli, and their son, Alex, Kevin (Stephanie) Williams, and their children, Joshua, Karissa, and Kaitlyn, Marc (Jen) Williams, and their daughters, Amanda and Holly, Michael (Katie) Williams Cindy (Jason) Ziarno and their sons, Austin and Colin, Kristin (Michael) Caldwell and their children, Anna, Zachary, and Madalyn, and Keith James; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Gladys and Robert Young, of Waynesburg, Iva June and Gene Anthony, of East Canton, and Donna Larusso, of Boston, MA. Services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Centenary United Methodist Church with Pastor Stan Purdum officiating. Interment in Sandy Valley Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Friends may call Monday 1-3 and 6-9 p.m. at the Finefrock-Gordon Funeral Home in Magnolia, and Tuesday 1-2 p.m. at the church before the service.
