Obituary

HAROLD G. GORTNEY, Age 67, of East Sparta, passed away Wed. evening in Mercy Medical Center. Born in Canton, a son of the late Holt and Pauline Johnson Gortney, he had been a life resident in the East Sparta area. Harold was a 1963 graduate of Sandy Valley High School, a member of Sandyville United Methodist Church, served with the U.S. Army Reserves for 16 years, and was the owner/operator of G&G Repair. He and Helen have had a camper on Walhonding River in Nellie, OH, for seven years, which he really enjoyed. Preceded in death by two sisters and one brother, Vivian Purdy, Ann Gortney, and Chris Gortney. Survived by his wife, Helen Gortney, with whom he would have celebrated their 23th Wedding Anniversary on Sept. 9th, 2012; two sons and four grandchildren, Heath Gortney and his children, Baily and Caden, and Jason Gortney and his sons, Jacob and Zachery, all of New Philadelphia; one brother and sister-in-law, George and Marjorie Gortney, of Canton; and his best friend, Carl Gausewitz. A Memorial Service will be held Mon. at 6 p.m. in the Chapel of the Canton Baptist Temple with Rev. Delaney Young officiating.
