Harold R. "Hal" Davenport, Jr.
Age 79, of Canton, passed away Monday afternoon in Meadow Wind Health Care Center. He was born in Scranton, PA, a son of the late Harold and Trudy Wertz Davenport, Sr., and had been a Canton resident since 1966. Hal was a 1949 graduate of Bexley High School in Columbus and a 1953 graduate of Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Education. Following his military service, he went to the University of Connecticut where he received his Masters Degree in Music Education in 1958. Hal retired in 1986 from Plain Local Schools, after 30 years service, where he taught elementary and middle school bands at Middlebranch. He began his teaching career at Plymouth, OH and Coshocton, OH prior to coming to Plain Local. He was honored as Teacher of The Year for Plain Local in 1985-86. Following his retirement he taught computers for Plain Local Adult Education. Hal was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church, where he had been organist for many years. He was a member of the American Guild of Organists, and published the Newsletter for the Guild for many years. After his family, music was the center of his life, and he also had a passion for sailing. Hal served in the U.S. Air Force as a Radar Operator, stationed in Othello, WA from April 1, 1954-March 31, 1956. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Scott Davenport, his sister, Kathryn Brisley, and a grandson, Scott Davenport. Survived by his wife, Nancy G. Davenport, with whom he would have celebrated their 49th Wedding Anniversary on June 24th; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robertson and Deborah Davenport, of Twinsburg, OH, and James and Vicki (Steiner) Davenport, of Columbus, OH; three grandsons, Craig and Sean Davenport, and Michael Steiner; a brother-in-law, Frank Brisley, of Avon Lake, OH; three nieces and one nephew. A Memorial Service will be held on Sat. at 1 p.m. in Calvary Presbyterian Church with Pastor C. David Morgan officiating. Following cremation, interment will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Columbus. The family will receive friends in the church Fellowship Hall immediately following the service.
