Gloria J. English Age 87, of Sandyville, passed away peacefully Monday Feb. 18, 2013 in Hennis Care Centre in Bolivar. She was born in Sandyville, a daughter of the late Wilbur and Kate (Tooze) Haverman, and was Salutatorian of the East Sparta High School Class of 1943. In her early years, she owned and operated a beauty shop in Mineral City and was employed by Caddey's Greenhouse in Sandyville. However, Gloria was best known as the Sandy Valley Branch Library librarian, where she enjoyed working for 18 years, starting at the age of 53, after raising her four daughters. Gloria was a long-time member of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Sandyville, Pike Township Historical Society, Auxiliary of Isaac L. Kinney American Legion Post #244 in East Sparta, Crossroads Chapter of the AARP, and met regularly with the retired Staff of Magnolia Grade School. Gloria loved to share the history of Sandyville, "the town that moved," with others and enjoyed making and giving "Gloria's Hot Socks" to friends and family. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Edgar E. English, on Sept. 13, 1999, and a son-in-law, Jerry Brown. Survived by four daughters, Eloise "Sam" Brown, of Canton, Shelley (Rick) Monroe, and Erika "Edee" (Steve) Putnam, all of Sandyville, and Shannon (Ray) Hexamer, of Canton; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church with Pastor John Maroni officiating. Interment in Greenlawn Cemetery in Sandyville. Friends may call Thursday 6-8 p.m. at the Finefrock-Gordon Funeral Home in Magnolia and Friday one hour before the service at the church.
