When Fred's pilot, Jeff Jeffrey, picked his crew, he said "he needed a red-head for good luck", and picked Fred, and they all returned home safely.  Fred returned home after the war and was recognized as Aspley's first and only Commissioned Officer. Fred received several medals for his service, the most notable being the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Esta Tanner, on July 25, 2010, and his sisters and brother, Dolly Skelcher, Elsie Carpenter, and Ken Tanner.  Survived by his dear friend and caregiver, Janis Moore and her family, his sister, Jean Young, of Peterborough, Ontario, 13 nieces and nephews.  According to his wishes there will be no services or calling hours.  A Celebration of his life will be held at a later date in Canada.  Condolences may be sent to: gordonfuneralhomes.com
