Obituary

Donald C. Sickafoose Age 88, of Magnolia, passed away Friday evening in Hennis Care Centre in Bolivar. He was born in Magnolia, a son of the late John and Nellie Iler Sickafoose, and was a life resident, but had wintered 10 years in Arizona and now had been wintering in Big Pine Key, Fl for a number of years. He was a 1938 graduate of Magnolia High School. Don delivered milk door to door from the family dairy following his marriage. He then owned and operated Magnolia Airport from 1947-1971. He was a pilot for 50 years, and gave flying lessons for 21 years before going into the oil well business. He founded Sickafoose-Wellman Gas & Oil Co. in 1979, and drilled wells in the Deerfield, OH area. He and Dan Larson formed Magnolia Drag Strip in 1956. He formed the Don & Madelyn Sickafoose Educational Loan Fund through the Stark County Foundation in 1983. Don helped form both the Carroll County and Tuscarawas County Foundation Educational Loan Funds whereby students from Carroll and Tuscarawas Counties could borrow funds to attend college. He also was a contributor to the Girl Scouts of Stark County to help with funds for a new building. Don was honored as Magnolia Area Outstanding Citizen at Canal Days in August of 1994. He was a member of Magnolia United Methodist Church, a 59 year member of Caldwell Lodge #330, F. & A.M. in Bolivar, and also a member of Al Koran Temple in Cleveland, Tadmor Temple in Akron, Mahi Shrine in Miami, FL, Nazir Grotto in Canton, North Canton Elks, the Moose Lodge in Big Pine Key, FL, and the Marathon, FL Shriners Club. Preceded in death by his first wife, Madelyn R. Sickafoose, on Feb. 28, 1990, a daughter, Joan Owen, on Jan. 4, 1997, one sister and three brothers, Marjorie Comber, Julius, Harold and Robert Sickafoose. Survived by his wife, Elsie Lambert Sickafoose; one daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Edward Eyster, of Magnolia; two sons and a daughter-in-law, John Sickafoose, of New Philadelphia, OH and Naples, FL, and Gerald and Connie Sickafoose, of Danville, CA; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Services will be conducted Wed. at 11 a.m. in the Finefrock-Gordon Funeral Home in Magnolia with Pastor Steven M. Smith and Dr. Richard Ruegg officiating. Friends may call Tuesday 6-8 p.m. Masonic Services will be held at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
