Obituary

Donald "Doc" Del Corso,

90, of Waynesburg passed away peacefully on the evening of Sat., Jan. 18, 2025 at the Hennis Care Centre in Bolivar, OH after a short illness. Don was born in Magnolia to the late Sam and Merina (Mutigli) DelCorso. He grew up and lived most of his life in Waynesburg, graduating from Waynesburg High School in 1952. Upon graduation young Donald received an athletic scholarship from Ohio University in Athens and played varsity basketball for the Bobcats for three years, graduating in 1956. He married his loving wife, Mary (Facchini) on September 22, 1956.

Don served in the U.S. Army 1956-1959, stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso TX. After his discharge from military service, Donald returned to his beloved hometown, Waynesburg, residing there for the rest of his life. Don and Mary lived less than one mile from Don's childhood home along Sandy Creek. Don worked at Timken Roller Bearings in Canton as a systems analyst for thirty-three years, 1959-1992.

Doc loved all sports, especially baseball and basketball. Be it boys or girls, youth or professional, Mount Union Raiders or Ohio Bobcats or Cleveland Indians, and all competition in between, Don would enthusiastically follow. This enthusiasm for athletics came naturally as Don DelCorso was a team member, starter, and team captain for the Waynesburg High School Mohawks basketball team that played to two consecutive state of Ohio runner up finishes in 1951 and 1952 in an era of only two high school divisions in basketball. An avid golfer, Doc could be seen throughout his life on local courses, wearing many different ball caps of his favorite teams.

For many years Don and Mary enjoyed wintering in Sarasota, Florida. Donald was a longtime member of the American Italian Club of Waynesburg and of St. James Catholic Church of Waynesburg. Don was married to his loving wife Mary (Facchini) for sixty-eight years, she survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Carol of Canton, Ohio and Janet of Waynesburg, Ohio.

As per Donald's wishes there will be no formal burial service. The Finefrock-Gordon Funeral Home in Magnolia is in charge of all arrangements. The DelCorso family is very appreciative of the professional and loving care Hennis Care Centre of Bolivar and Crossroads Hospice blessed Donald with in his final days. A special thank you to Elizabeth Borsellino for all her caring assistance and friendship to Don and the family.  If friends of Doc would like to donate to an organization in his honor, please consider: Crossroads Hospice, https://www.crhcf.org/donate, Magnolia Area Historical Society (Vince Costello Memorial Complex Project), or Waynesburg Historical Society.   Condolences may be left at www.gordonfuneralhomes.com.
