Obituary

Charles W. Grell

Age 89, of Magnolia, passed away Thursday, Jan. 15, 2015, in Hennis Care Centre in Bolivar.  He was born in Lawrenceville, IL, a son of the late Whitmer and Sara (Gher) Grell, and had been a resident of the East Sparta area most of his life.  Charles was a 1943 graduate of East Sparta High School and a 1950 graduate of Carnegie-Mellon University with a Degree in Metallurgical Engineering.  He retired in 1986, after 30 years service, as Plant Manager of Empire Detroit Steel in Dover.  Charles served in the U. S. Army during World War II in the 94th Infantry Division in France, Germany, Luxembourg, and Czechoslovakia, as part of Patton's Third Army.  He was a member of Isaac L. Kinney American Legion Post #244 in East Sparta, and enjoyed reading and yard work, and volunteered at the Wilderness Center for many years.  Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Bill Bailey.  Survived by his wife, Bertha C. (Truax) Grell, with whom he celebrated their 64th Wedding Anniversary on Sept. 16, 2014; one daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Tim Belden, and granddaughter,  Nicole Belden, all of East Sparta; one son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Peggy Grell, of Canton; one sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Leo Smith, of Kinston, NC, and their son, Joel (Christian) Smith.  Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Finefrock-Gordon Funeral Home in Magnolia with Pastor Peggy Garner officiating.  Interment in Greenlawn Cemetery in Sandyville with full Military Honors.  Friends may call Monday 6-8 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Grell's memory may be made to the Wilderness Center, 9877 Alabama Ave. SW, Wilmot, OH 44689.  Condolences may be sent to: www.gordonfuneralhomes.com
