Bill Mitzel
Age 73, of Canton, passed away Tuesday morning in Hospitality House. He was born in Carrollton, a son of the late Paul and Kathryn Smeltz Mitzel, grew up in Magnolia, and had been a Canton resident since 1994. Bill was a 1955 graduate of Sandy Valley High School where he played basketball. He retired in 1996 from The Timken Co., after 32 years service, where he was a strander. Bill was honored by induction into the Stark County Fumbleball Hall of Fame in 2004. He played for numerous fumbleball teams, including Walther's Cafe, Green River Cafe, Waynesburg Nite Club, and Tozzi's Cafe. Preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Carol J. Mitzel, on Dec. 9, 1998, and a brother, Pete Mitzel. Survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Terri and Greg Surbey, of North Canton, and Jayne Slutz, of Canton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Michelle Mitzel, of Navarre, and Mike and Maryann Mitzel, of Smith Mountain Lake, VA; one sister, Shirley Columbo, of Malvern; a sister-in-law, Dottie Mitzel, of Egg Harbor, NJ; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Dick and Janice Mitzel, of Hot Springs, AR, David and Nancy Mitzel, of Newton, KS, and Jeff and Judy Mitzel, of Carrollton; and five grandchildren, Kelsey Surbey, Michael Slutz II, Alexis Slutz, Claire and Jack Mitzel, and Alexandria Mitzel. Services will be conducted Sat. at 2 p.m. in Finefrock-Gordon Funeral home in Magnolia with Pastor Steven M. Smith officiating. Interment in Magnolia Cemetery. Friends may call Fri. from 6-8 p.m.
