Obituary

Betty Rose (Fink) Thompson

Betty Rose Thompson went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, June 16, 2023. She was born February 3, 1928 in Canton, Ohio to the late Alfred P. Fink and Mildred E. Zirhut. Betty reunites with her beloved husband of 75 years, William Harold Thompson.  She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Mellinger and husband Louis of Hackettstown, NJ, daughter-in-law Elizabeth "Tanny" Aemmer Thompson of Canton, son William H. Thompson II and wife Kathleen of North Canton, grandsons Charles Thompson of Canton, Michael Thompson and wife Tiffany of Canton, William L. Mellinger and Andrea Huie of Medford, NJ, Robert Mellinger and wife, Joanna of Independence, NJ, William Thompson III and wife Angelica of Brecksville and granddaughter Laura Vogel and husband William of Canal Fulton and nine great grandchildren.  Betty was predeceased by her husband William and son Richard A. Thompson of Canton.

Betty had endless energy, passion and dedication. She loved her church and as a lifelong member of Lowell Church, served her church family and community on committees including Church Fellowship, Altar Guild, Young at Heart, and many others. Betty loved cooking monthly for the Young at Heart seniors and decorating the church for the holidays, handing out poinsettias for Christmas, gathering items for the mitten tree, writing beautiful and compassionate notes to the ill and infirmed, and making baskets for those in need. Later she would help set up the Sunday coffee hour before church which gave her church family time to gather and chat.

Betty enjoyed participating in 5k Charity Walking Events and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity. She made memory blankets to give to homebound church members and was known for the delicious pies she baked for them. During the holidays her grandchildren always knew grandma would bake their favorite pies and make her homemade fudge.

She was an active member of various Parent Teacher Organizations, the Stark County Board of Elections as a poll worker for twenty-five years and she enjoyed league bowling for twenty-five years.  Betty loved to garden and always had beautiful flowers and plenty of tomatoes and zucchini for everyone and rhubarb to make strawberry-rhubarb pie.  Betty, mom, grandma loved and cherished her home filled with her family and joyous noise and laughter. She will be deeply missed by her family.  The family wishes to thank the loving and caring staff at the Chelsea at Brookfield and Ennoble Hospice Care for their support, love and compassionate care of Betty.
