Obituary

Betty Mae Allison

of Canton, passed away peacefully Sat., December 24, 2022, just three days after her 101st birthday.  She was born Dec. 21, 1921 in East Sparta, a daughter of the late Roy and Elsie (Tooze) Gill, and had been a Canton resident most of her life.  Betty grew up in East Sparta where she met and married the love of her life, John William (Bill) Allison, and was a 1940 graduate of East Sparta High School.  Since 1947 the Allison Family has owned and operated the E. D. Lang Monument Company, with Betty's husband Bill starting there in 1949 with his father Fred Allison.  After spending 18 years as a stay-at-home wife and mother, Betty came into the office in 1964 as it's bookkeeper for 36 years to help Bill, and their son, Tim, who has been managing the business since 1987.

Her life was full of love and activities.  Betty was a long-time member of the former St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Canton where she served on many committees and in many leadership roles, including as a founding member of the Bell Choir.  Betty was a very active member of the Junior Women's Club of Canton. She helped found the Junior Women's Clubs of North Canton and East Sparta, and had served as a Regional Representative to the National Convention.  Betty also was a member of the Soroptimist Business Women's Club and the Red Hat Society, and many other charities and club activities. Betty and Bill loved to travel and spend time with friends and relatives.  They especially loved to spend time aboard their boat, "Honeybett", entertaining family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, John William Allison on Jan. 25, 1988, two brothers, Bob and Harold Gill, an infant sister, Dorothy Rose and a beloved grandson, Brett Allison.  Betty was a loving wife and the mother of two sons, Terry  (Barbara) Allison and Timothy Allison and Donna Tedrick; also surviving is her loving sister, Rosemary (Jim) Herstine; a much loved and devoted grandmother to Tara Munier, and Jennifer (Gary) Hengelsberg, great-grandmother (GiGi) to Logan William Munier, Matthew and Ryan Hengelsberg.

Services will be held Monday, Jan. 9, 2023 at 11 a.m. in the Finefrock-Gordon Funeral Home in Magnolia with Timothy Carlson officiating. The Bell Choir from East Sparta Christian Church, playing the bells she donated to the church, will play at her service. Friends may call one hour before the service from 10-11 a.m.  Interment will be in North Lawn Cemetery in Canton. Condolences may be sent to: www.gordonfuneralhomes.com
