Obituary

Bette G. Elliott age 91, of North Canton, passed away on October 23, 2011, after a lengthy illness. She spent the last days of her life at her son's home in London, Ohio. Her passing was peaceful, supported by family with the help of Loving Care Hospice. She was born in Mansfield, Ohio, in 1920, the daughter of R. A. and Addie Mae (Nichols) Greene. Her husband, Howard W. Elliott, passed away on Aug. 9, 1975. Her brother, Richard Greene, and sister, Gladys Brady, died many years later. Bette attended Otterbein College where she met her lifelong love, Howard, and graduated in 1941 with both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. During World War II, while Howard was overseas, she worked as an inspector at Kilgore's in Westerville where she tested hand grenades, among other duties. Bette was a critically acclaimed artist in watercolor and acrylic media and won many awards in Ohio and in the Canton area. Her paintings have been displayed in many parts of the world and the United States. She was an active member of the Ohio Watercolor Society and the Canton Artists League and supported the Canton Art Institute and the Little Art Gallery in the North Canton Public Library. She is listed in Marquis' Who's Who and Who's Who in American Art. Bette taught art privately in her studio for many years and some of her students and friends attended classes for decades. At one time, she was an adjunct professor at Kent State in Stark County and taught at the Canton Art Institute and the Little Art Gallery. Her students and friends honored her in 2005 at a gala at the Canton Art Institute to praise her success and her contributions to the art community. She was selected as a Woman of the Year by the Canton Women's Club in 2008. One of her great friends in life was McDuff, a great, big, lovable Golden Retriever, who delighted in stealing napkins off laps and items out of students' bags and then teasing them. He made us all laugh. He was the life of any party, much like his mistress. She is survived by her sons, Casey (Maria) of London, Ohio, and Brady (Anne) of Miami, Florida, and four grandsons: Brian, Spencer (Katharine), Iain and Winston. Her life will be celebrated at a gathering on Friday, Nov. 25, 2011, from 6-9 p.m. at the Canton Museum of Art, with a time of memories at 6:30 p.m. Please have a Bette story ready if you can attend. A Private interment of her ashes beside her husband in North Canton Cemetery will be held on Friday morning. The Formet-Clevenger & Gordon Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, and is honored to display 17 of her paintings of local landmarks throughout the building.
