IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Arnold H.
Savage
July 5, 1926 – December 21, 2020
Arnold H. Savage
Age 94, of Waynesburg, passed away Monday, Dec. 21, 2020. He was born July 5, 1926 in Cleveland, OH, a son of the late Stephen and Madonna (Schreiner) Savage, and had been a Waynesburg resident most of his life. He was a 1944 graduate of Peoria, IL High School. Arnold was a retired farmer, whose family farm was located at the corner of Route 171 and Morges Road south of Waynesburg. He was a life member of the Magnolia Historical Society. Arnold was a nationally renowned and award-winning quilter, completing over 75 quilts throughout his life, and was inducted into the Quilters Hall of Fame in Marion, IN. In 1932 while in the first grade, Arnold came down with rheumatic fever. His Great Aunt Alice (who raised his mom, Madonna Savage) stayed and helped take care of him, showing Arnold the basics of quilting to keep him from being bored while bedridden. Arnold was an accomplished cellist, playing first chair for the Cleveland Philharmonic and fourth chair for the Cincinnati Symphony for over 20 years. Arnold was also an accomplished figure skater, competing until the 1980's when he turned 62. He was part of the famed US figure skating team in the 1950's and 1960's, and fortunately was not on the 1961 flight that killed all the US members travelling to the World Figure Skating Championships in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Arnold continued his passion for skating as a judge for state and regional competitions until the 1990's, and taught at Oberlin College in northern Ohio. Arnold proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He is survived by cousins and two special friends. Friends may call Saturday 1-2 p.m. at the Finefrock-Gordon Funeral Home in Magnolia followed by interment in Magnolia Cemetery with Military Honors.
