William Murray

William F. Murray Sr.
Age 81, of Massillon, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017 in his home surrounded by his loving family.  He was born in Wellsville, OH, a son of the late Harry and Elizabeth (Whittaker) Murray, resided in Waynesburg for 41 years and in Canton South for 16 years before recently moving to Massillon. He and his wife, Nancy, enjoyed their winters in Sarasota, FL for the past 16 years where he loved to play horseshoes, euchre, golf, and bingo.  Bill was a 1955 graduate of Minerva High School.  He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Waynesburg.  He retired from The Timken Co. in 1998 as a machine operator, after 30 years of service, also served on the Timken Fire Dept.   Following his retirement, he worked part-time for Bartley’s Ambulance Service where he enjoyed serving many patients and would often provide them with surprise treats to brighten their day. He had been elected to the Waynesburg Board of Public Affairs which he served as President for almost 20 years.  Bill volunteered on the Robertsville Fire Dept. from 1955-1968, and volunteered with the Waynesburg Fire Dept. from 1968 to Jan. 1994, where he retired as a Captain.   He also volunteered as a driver for Quad Ambulance for over 22 years. Bill also took time to be a Scout Master for the Waynesburg Boy Scouts and coached his son and daughter’s baseball and softball teams. He served in the United States Marine Corps for six years where he worked in the message center before being drafted into the Army, where he was in the Signal Corps.  Bill enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially taking care of his yard and always offering a lending hand to his neighbors. Bill adored his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and enjoyed attending their sporting events. He was an avid Cleveland Indians fan. He loved to dance with his wife and play cards with his family.  Bill was an extremely hard worker and was always willing to help others, and always saw the good in everyone.  Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Murray, and a brother-in-law, Don Baxter.  He is survived by his wife, Nancy L. Murray, with whom he celebrated their 57th Wedding Anniversary on Sept. 17th; one daughter, Nikki (Michael) Herstine, one son, Bill “Bouncer” (Linda) Murray; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Cole Murray, Lucas (Samantha) Murray and their children, Luke, Ellie, and Emmy; Morgan (Evan) McIntosh and their son, Ezra; two sisters, Lola Hoover and Doris (Al) Rice; four brothers, Harry (Carlene) Murray, Mike (Roberta) Murray, James (Phyllis) Murray, and Gale (Tina) Murray; a brother-in-law, Bob (Sue) Baxter, and a sister-in-law, Joann (Jim) Brown; and cherished all his nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express their special thanks to Dr. Mariquita Belen for her extraordinary compassion and care throughout Bill’s illness and to Aultman Hospice and Palliative Care.  Following cremation, a Memorial Service will be held Thursday, Dec. 28, 2017, at 7 p.m. in the Finefrock-Gordon Funeral Home in Magnolia with Fr. Joseph Zamary officiating.  Friends may call Thursday 4-7 p.m. before the service.  A Last Alarm Service will be held Thursday at 6:45 p.m.  Inurnment will be Friday at 1 p.m. in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery with Full Military Honors.  Anyone wishing to attend the burial please meet at Formet-Clevenger & Gordon Funeral Home, 1803 Cleveland Ave. NW, in Canton at 11:30 a.m. prior to leaving for the National Cemetery.  Memorial contributions in Bill’s memory may be made to St. James Catholic School, St. James Catholic Church, 400 W.
