John L. Herstine, Jr.

Age 71, of Magnolia, passed away Monday, August, 7, 2017, after a long struggle with Non- Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, in his home surrounded by his loving family.  John was born in Canton, a son of the late John L. and Jewel (Archinal) Herstine, Sr., and was a life resident of Magnolia.  He was a 1964 graduate of Sandy Valley High School.  John retired in 2012, from Select Energy, where he was a technician for the Salt Water Disposal Wells, and previously had worked for Republic Steel, TRW, The Timken Co., and Belden-Blake.  He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was an active member of the NRA, The National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association, and the Association of Ohio Long Rifle Collectors.  John enjoyed hunting, blacksmithing, woodworking, and being a gunsmith.  Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Janet Gardner.  John is survived by his wife, Veda “Vicki” Herstine, with whom he would have celebrated their 53rd Wedding Anniversary on Dec. 12th; three daughters, Beth (Scott) Eatmon, Kimberly Hager, and Cindi Dagenhard; one son, John (Lynne) Herstine III; 14 grandchildren, two great-grandsons, and one soon to be born; his beloved cat Skippy; one sister, Joyce Nero; and five brothers, Jimmie (Tina) Herstine, Jerry (Cheryl) Herstine, Jay (Carol) Herstine, Joe (Carolyn) Herstine, and Jeff (LeAnn) Herstine; and numerous nieces and nephews.  Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church in Magnolia with Pastor J. Andrew Riggs officiating.  Interment will be in Magnolia Cemetery.  Friends may call Thursday 5-8 p.m. at the Finefrock-Gordon Funeral Home in Magnolia and Friday 10-11 a.m. at the church before the service.  Contributions in John’s memory may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, PO Box 464, Magnolia, OH  44643, or to the Salvation Army nearest you.  Condolences may be sent to: www.gordonfuneralhomes.com
