George Eugene Close

George Eugene Close   1922 - 2017

Age 94, of Magnolia, passed away Sunday, Jan.8, 2017 in Hennis Care Centre in Bolivar.  He was born in East Sparta, a son of the late H. Gray and H. Laverta (Halter) Close and was a life resident.  Eugene was a 1940 graduate of East Sparta High School.  He retired in 1986 from Belden & Blake after over 20 years of service.  He lived on the century old family farm where he could enjoy his favorite outdoor activities of farming and gardening.  Eugene was very active in East Sparta Christian Church, having served as an Elder, Deacon, and Trustee.  He also was a member of Pike Grange.  Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Kathleen Close, on July 10, 2007, and a granddaughter, Bethany Cordes.  He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Marybeth and Richard Cordes, of Magnolia; his son, Tom Close, of North Canton, and Cindy Close, of Pittsburgh, PA; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Jonathan Cordes, Ashley (Pete) Kandis, and their children, Jacob, Anna, and Gus, Philip Cordes, Joshua Close, and Amanda (Josiah) Dhaenens.  Finally, he is survived by several of his cousins on the Halter side.  Services will be held Sat. at 11 a.m. in East Sparta Christian Church with Andrew Bailey and Roger Crego officiating.   Interment will be in East Sparta Cemetery.  Friends may call Friday 4-7 p.m. at the Finefrock-Gordon Funeral Home in Magnolia and Sat. at the church 10-11 a.m. before the service.  Condolences may be sent to: www.gordonfuneralhomes.com
