Carl J. Slackford
Age 75, of Canton, passed away Thursday, November 1, 2018 after a brief illness and living with Parkinson’s disease for 35 years. Carl was born in Canton on April 21, 1943, a son of the late Rose (Noturno) Housos. He was a 1962 graduate of Canton Lincoln High School, and served in the U.S. Army Reserves. Carl retired from Conrail Railroad after 30 years. He was a 2010 inductee into the Greater Canton Amateur Billiards Association Hall of Fame. He loved music and played the organ for many years. Carl was a loving husband, father and grandfather who cherished his family and many friends. He was a proud grandpa and treasured time with his grandchildren. In addition to his mother, Carl was preceded in death by his stepfather, Angelo Housos, and sisters-in-law Helen Ann Raley and Molly Raley. Carl is survived by his wife Gertrude “Gertie” (Raley) Slackford, with whom he would have celebrated 52 years of marriage on November 5, his daughters Amy (James) Pukys, and their daughter Kasey, of Canton, and Jennifer (Patrick) George, and their children Emma and Ryan, of Massillon. He is also survived by his brother Richard (Martha) Slackford, sisters Donna Bowling, Elaine Sprit, and Ethel “Bobbie” Lockerd, stepbrother George (Linda) Housos, and many nieces and nephews. Services will be held Thursday at 11:30am at Christ Presbyterian Church in Canton with Rev. Eldon Trubee and Rev. David de Vries officiating. Friends may call on Wednesday at Formet-Clevenger & Gordon Funeral Home from 6:00-8:00pm, and on Thursday before the service at the church from 10:00-11:00am. Interment in Sunset Hills Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Carl’s memory may be made to Christ Presbyterian Church at 530 Tuscarawas Street W, Canton 44702, or the Salvation Army.
