Richard F. Herman

Age 82, of Plain Township, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, April 5, 2018.  Born August 22, 1935 in Crystal ,Springs, OH, to the late Amil Benjamin and Barbara (Greene) Herman.  He also was preceded in death by a brother, Benjamin J. Herman and three year old sister, Mary Elizabeth.  Richard was a U. S. Army veteran, serving with the 54th Armored Field Artillery Battalion stationed in Stuttgart, Germany, and received the distinction of Sharpshooter.   He was employed by Babcock and Wilcox for 30 years in the Naval Equipment Division and was proud to have contributed to the design of the reactor vessel of the Titan submarine.  He was awarded by B & W for securing a design patent.  A 1953 graduate of Jackson High School, Richard played on the football team and became a lifetime fan of the Polar Bears.  He loved all animals, golf, fishing, ballroom dancing, and the beaches of the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  He enjoyed many cruises taking him through the Panama Canal en route to Hawaii, Fiji, Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia, and rounding South America.  He ventured on several maiden voyage Atlantic crossings and the Mediterranian, visiting Africa’s northern coast.  Richard is survived by his wife of 48 years, Carole (Walker) Herman.  There are no calling hours.  A celebration of life will be held at a later date.  Condolences may be sent to: www.gordonfuneralhomes.com
